A project that will result in more streamlined and customer-focused service and which will save the Oxfordshire taxpayer millions of pounds has been successfully launched by the county council on time and on budget.

The first 100 staff from human resources and finance will start the move from city centre offices to a new shared service centre at Chiltern House in Cowley next week as part of the centralisation of the council’s back-office support functions.

A further 260 human resources and finance staff will move to the centre throughout 2007.

How much will the move save the taxpayer? It is estimated that the move will save the taxpayer £27 million over the first eight years of operation alone with continuing savings thereafter.

Councillor John Howell, the council's Cabinet Member for Change Management, said: ""This is a rare example of being able to have your cake and eat it. It is about both providing better service and saving money.

“By relocating staff under one roof we can deliver a more consistent and customer-focused service. In delivering our support services in this way, not only do finance and human resources services improve, they are delivered for less money."
