CGI Group Inc., Canada's largest computer consulting firm, said on Wednesday its U.S. subsidiary has won a $300 million, seven-year contract with the state of Virginia. The highly anticipated deal, to consolidate and update processes and technology, also has two optional three-year renewal periods, CGI said.

Montreal-based CGI said its U.S. operating subsidiary, CGI-AMS Inc., will begin work immediately on the project with three other firms. CGI acquired American Management Systems Inc., or AMS, in 2004 for $858 million.

In October, CGI entered final contract negotiations with Virginia, beating out such rivals as IBM as the prime contractor.
