Broadcaster alleges personal information leak at an India-based call center

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), Australia’s public broadcaster, has alleged that employees of a Gurgaon, India based call center are illegally selling personal information of thousands of Australians for as little as a few US dollars per person.
ABC did not divulge details of the purchase. Neither did it disclose the name of the company operating the call center nor the journalist who had earlier conducted a similar sting operation at a call center in Gurgaon. However, Australia’s attorney-general Philip Ruddock has asked the federal police to look into ABC’s allegations.The accusation comes at a time when India is trying hard to convince the outsourcing community of its data safety record, after a similar scam was unearthed by a British newspaper. In June, the British tabloid Sun claimed that an employee of a Gurgaon call center, divulged personal details of over 1,000 Britons for USD 5 per head.
