In almost 60 percent of the cases, outsourcing professionals now have the lead role when it comes to designing and managing their company's end-to-end outsourcing process, according to a recently completed survey by the International Association of Outsourcing Professionals (IAOP).
Just as importantly, with 40 percent of these professionals also setting up and managing their company's outsourcing project teams, they are increasingly both designers and implementers. The just released survey "Are you an Outsourcing Professional?" gives
important insights into this new management profession. For example,
outsourcing professionals actually operate across the business and at multiple
levels: 25 percent are line executives; 44 percent work within specific
functional areas, like information technology, real estate, shared services,
and manufacturing; and 31 percent have company-wide responsibility working in
departments like strategic planning, procurement, and sourcing.
"Outsourcing professionals are no longer working from the sidelines," says
Michael F. Corbett, executive director, IAOP. "Increasingly these business
experts are right on the playing field, determining what the organization
outsources, why, and how best to work with its external partners."
The study also found that the top challenges outsourcing professionals
face are governance, provider selection, gaining executive buy-in, and
assessing value. To address these, outsourcing professionals are focused on
creating a body of knowledge around trends, best practices, and deal
structures; knowledge-sharing; and training, standards, and certification
programs to help ensure better, more consistent results.
