Deloitte has established a focused training facility with support of the Automotive Supplier Park in the industrial heart of Tshwane, Rosslyn. This is because Deloitte recognises that in order to grow the South African economy and support job creation, the priority is to speed up training and skills development.

The new facility, called the Shared Services Training Centre (SSTC) will see some workers trained and acquiring skills ranging from supervisory to managerial and executive level.

“With the participation of a diverse range of role-players, Deloitte envisages involvement in training initiatives by a much broader stakeholder base. Deloitte is committed to make a positive contribution through using its vast global experience to create a value-adding service to the project - SSTC” says Werner Nieuwoudt, partner at Deloitte.

The Automotive Supplier Park, also known as the “ASP”, is an initiative by Blue IQ, the Gauteng Provincial Government’s economic turnaround strategy. The “ASP” supports the automotive industry in the Province involving various stakeholders including City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality and Rosslyn Strategic Forum.
Through the Sector Education and Training Authorities (Seta’s), an enabling training environment has been created. This needs to be leveraged through practical skills development based on what industry needs to improve its competitiveness and absorb labour. “On the one hand we need to upgrade the skills base and on the other hand we need to drive up the labour uptake,” says Nieuwoudt.

Deloitte has established a Shared Services Training Centre (SSTC) in the “ASP”. The SSTC concept is centred on the need of a shared learning centre close to the automotive assemblers, the ASP tenants and various other industry players. The Tshwane North College’s Rosslyn Campus has declared an interest to align as a possible strategic partner of the SSTC. Consultation for the possible partnership is currently underway. “We believe that this concept could optimise skills development and training and deliver on the outcomes promised to learners,” says Marinda Bastiaans, Principal of the Tshwane North College. It is imperative to state that FET College has been identified as the main vehicle of Government to deliver skilled learners to the country and this emphasises TNC mandate to focus on consolidating Industry links to deliver on these training initiatives.

The Deloitte SSTC will use the resources originating from the automotive industry to boost the benefits of this training facility to the advantage of other industries and the surrounding communities. The training focus will cover basic and supervisory skills up to managerial and executive level.

“Our vision is to support the automotive industry by facilitating the introduction of important key services in the ASP for our partners and tenants. By doing so, we can improve the operating environment for the companies and achieve synergies” says Jochen Freese, Managing Director of the Automotive Supplier Park.

“We welcome and support this skills development and training initiative. It clearly demonstrates the developmental benefits that can derive from a partnership between public and private sector organizations,” he said

The Automotive Industry Development Centre (AIDC), which also plays a role in the ASP, is a development centre with the mandate to assist the automotive industry in becoming globally more competitive. One of its focus areas is skills development and training. “By identifying real industry needs and by helping to improve the capacity of tertiary and further education and training institutions and by ensuring that the training programmes are relevant to industry needs, we can create a win-win situation”, says Jan Grobbelaar, Skills Development and Training Manager of the AIDC.
