IBM launches offshore center in Australia

IBM Corp plans to open a major business process outsourcing center in Australia, creating up to 1,000 jobs over the next 10 years.
IBM plans to open the center in Brisbane to service companies throughout the Asia-Pacific region, particularly Japan. The center will cover all the horizontal lines of BPO, including customer relationship management, human resources, finance and accounting, supply chain management, and procurement.While Asia is often used as the best location for offshore English language skills, IBM said it chose Australia because it offered a "unique blend of languages and skills" to service the Asia-Pacific region.
Last month it was revealed that IBM is planning to increase its headcount in India by over 14,000 to reach a total of over 38,000 by the end of the year. It is slashing 13,000 employees from its payroll as a result of a shortfall in sales and profits in the first quarter. The cuts will mainly take place in Europe where the company has begun a major restructuring process.
