Eircom's new metro ethernet service will provide large businesses in the greater Dublin area with an ethernet connection capable of data transfer speeds of up to one gigabit per second (Gbps) -- this is 100 times faster than the original ethernet. The service is also about 1,000 times faster than a standard 1Mbps broadband DSL connection, which some firms use to link branch offices.
Ethernet is common in Local Area Networks (LAN), and it is the standard for connecting computers to an office network. More recently, gigbit ethernet has become available, allowing firms to transfer information at about 1 billion bits-per-second.Companies who sign up for Eircom's metro ethernet will be able to facilitate inter-working between offices, disaster recovery, LAN transfer and data access in real time, according to the firm. The service will be primarily targeted at large organisations who have multiple offices around the city and public sector bodies.
Eircom's first customer for this new network is the Eastern Health Shared Services (EHSS). The EHSS is responsible for providing Information Communications and Technology (ICT) services to all the health board offices in the Eastern Regional Health Authority areas of Dublin, Wicklow and Kildare.
The EHSS, which is based in Dr. Steeven's Hospital in Dublin 8, recently outsourced its IT function to a company based in Citywest. The organisation's servers -- now also located in Citywest -- run several fundamental applications for the health boards including e-mail and the accident & emergency systems used in the area's hospitals making the fast connection of gigabit ethernet essential for smooth operation.
Metro Ethernet is gaining in popularity in Western Europe as demand for broadband and transparent LAN services increases according to a survey by research group IDC last year. The study predicted that spending on metro ethernet services in the region will grow to EUR2.4 billion by 2007.
Eircom aims to expand the metro Ethernet service to Cork before the end of 2004. It is also currently working on a portfolio of high-speed products such as business internet protocol (IP) and next generation multi-protocol label switching, which is a solution for bandwidth management and service requirements of next generation IP.
