Benchmarking shared services is still in its infancy so the level of interest and success of the FASSBEX (Finance & Accounting Shared Services Benchmarking EXchange) will be of interest to all Finance & Accounting shared services managers.
The first five organisations to join the FASSBEX programme concluded phase one on the 10th April.Finance and Accounting shared services managers from Corus, Impress Metals, Telewest, Adviso AS and Rolls-Royce Marine met at the Holiday Inn, Manchester Airport, to compare performance and exchange ideas and practices. In preparation for the event each had supplied answers to detailed benchmarking questionnaires identifying process differences; quantifying volumes, costs, times and organisation complexity; demonstrating the extent of use of best practices and assessing qualitative performance.
Day One
Ian Malcolm (Score Research), supported by Paul Turrell (Cannock Chase) facilitated a detailed review of the drivers and enablers of better performance at the strategic level. The subject matter included:
· Benchmark metrics comparison and gap analysis
· Commercialising shared services
· A Vision of the future of shared services
· The ingredients of successful shared services
Day Two
Building on from the learning of the previous day the group eagerly delved into performance comparison and gap analysis at the more detailed payables process level. It was valuable to cross-fertilise practices from organisations representing three, very different sectors of industry. In stretching our vision, we had excellent help from Del Attah and Richard Lucy (Zeraxis), who demonstrated a "purchase to pay" web-based application.
Phase 2
The group has set themselves a very demanding schedule for the next phase of the FASSBEX programme, concluding in July. Subjects to be benchmarked include:
Strategic level
· Service level agreements
· Skills mix
· Customer surveys
· Branding and Marketing of services
Process level
· Billing and Receivables
· Travel and Expenses
· Close of Books
· Payroll
· Fixed assets
Organisations wishing to join the next programme, should apply to FASSBEX
